This article refers to how companies market to teenagers and
how teenagers give in to the advertising. How marketers advertise to teenagers
and how the teenagers respond is explained. Marketers go through media,
including tv shows, magazines, and the internet to catch the teenager’s
interest. Then, teenagers believe they cannot be satisfied until they buy the
product being advertised. Since teenagers like to spend money, they buy the
product. Also, teenagers are growing up in a life of instant satisfaction in a
materialistic society. They need to learn how to understand what the
advertisement is actually selling and if they really need it.
What are some ways someone could teach teenagers to
recognize what the advertisements are selling and if they need the product or
not?
What do you think are some unique ways not discussed in the
article of how marketers can target teenagers?
The best way I can see to recognize what an advertisement is trying to sell is to see what the ad actually says about the item, and not the setting of the ad. Let's say the object in question is a pair of jeans for guys. Does the commercial emphasize the durability, quality, and comfortableness of the jeans? Or are the jeans on a shirtless, oiled-up model and the ad says the jeans increase your sex-appeal even more? Basically take out all of the flash and exaggerations, what is an advertisement really saying about its product.
