Jersey Shore Advertisement

Jersey Shore Ad

This picture above is an add for MTV's Jersey Shore. It shows a drawing of a man and what muscles are being used while drinking. Below it says "muscles + gel + tanning bed = sex" and "Get Jersey Shored". The show has been viewed by almost every American teenager. It shows the stars drinking alcohol, having sex and getting in fights. The group boasts their Italian heritage, but many Italian groups ridicule the show and say that the show reflects negatively upon the Italian-American population.

Do you think this advertisement for the Jersey Shore tries to tell teens that if they are tan and muscular they will have sex? Is this ad positive for teen's self image or negative? Why?

  1. I do not believe this advertisement for the Jersey Shore tries to tell teens that if they are tan and muscular they will have sex. Teens have sex no matter what color, size, shape, muscular, or non-muscular they are. The Jersey Shore is just a television show that target teenage viewers because of what goes on during the show but it does not influence peoples thought on whether they will have sex or not if they look like Mike, Pauly D, or Ronnie. For instance, Vinny is not muscular and he does not gel his hair and he still have sex on the show. However, I do believe that this is a negative ad for teens because it's encouraging teenage drinking and telling teens that they have to look a certain why in order to have sex, which is not the case. They way you look should not have an impact on if you will have sex or not.

  2. The advertisement isn't specifically saying, "if you are tan and muscular you will have sex," but it is something that it could definitely be interpreted as saying. It all depends on the person reading the ad. Rather I think that it's describing the theme of the show and what you'll see if you watch. This ad isn't positive for a teen's self image and depending on the person it could be taken as being negative. It's up to the viewer to know that they're watching a reality television show and that the majority of what happens isn't anything to be taken seriously. You definitely shouldn't assume that muscles, gel, and a tanning bed automatically equals sex or you may end up disappointed.

  3. I find the fact that the image does not list alcohol in the equation kind of funny since its next to the gelled hair, muscles, and tan body. The alcohol also seems like an anomaly because if a person drank as much as the people on jersey shore than the person would gain weight from all the calories, a.k.a. beer belly. The image makes it seem like drinking is a way to stay in shape, when really it could easily be the reason the people on jersey shore work out. Another problem I have with the ad is that it is supposed to influence kids to watch the show, but I think it just tells kids to buy hair gel and tanning bed memberships, which does not benefit the show.
The ad is definitely negative in my eyes, teens have enough pressure to look certain ways from either their parents or peers. Teens do not need to be orange to be cool; we need a society showing teens that being yourself is actually a great thing.

  4. I consider this ad almost comical, more than anything. I know there are some teenagers out there that strive to live the Jersey Shore life, but I would hope most think that their lifestyle is ridiculous. Because of this, I don't think the ad gives a negatived self-image to teenagers. It may negatively affect some, but I think this would just get a laugh from most teens.

  6. Most teens I have encountered, including myself, watch the Jersey Shore because they find humor and entertainment in it. In no way do they want to try to mimic the lives of the cast of Jersey Shore. There may be some teens out there who do but I think most don't. The media often puts them in a bad light and puts emphasis on how big of messed they all are. Most people do not want to portray themselves the way the jersey Shore cast does even if they do want to have sex. I think this ad might be trying to give off the impression that you should be tan and muscular, but honestly I don't think many teens buy into it. Therefore I don't think it has negative effects on most teens, but there is always exceptions.
