This is a video clip from the movie John Tucker Must Die, a popular movie about a group of high school girls attempting to embarrass a male classmate in front of the entire school.  The clip depicts a girl, Brittany Snow, who, with the help of her friends, tries to tempt John Tucker to climb across several balconies to her room.  In the clip she puts a lot of effort into portraying herself as “sexy,” sporting lingerie and subtly hinting that they won’t just be hanging out if he comes to her room.  However, when he finally climbs through the door to a dark room it turns out the room is not Brittany’s but instead a parental figure who proceeds to drag him down the hallway to the coach’s room.  After an embarrassing encounter with the majority of his classmates in the hallway, Brittany tells him she must have counted wrong and gives a dainty “sorry” in return for the mistake.

Do you think that sex draws people to do outrageous things like climb across several balconies to be rewarded with sex?  Do you think that guys are more likely to react to sex appeal than women because of the extremes taken by John Tucker in the movie?  The music playing in the background claims “I want you so hard, I want you so good,” so would it be fair to say that even though John gets caught, that some actions are worth taken if the reward is great enough?  Do you think producers use sex to sell movies?

  1. I don't think sex necessarily drives people to do outrageous things like the movie said. Yeah sometimes people can be in the moment and do something a little extreme but not to this extent. If people were willing to climb across balconies, wouldn't there be more actual stories like this? Not just in movies? Guys probably are more willing to do something outrageous compared to women but John Tucker Must Die is a comedy, not a realistic film. Comedies tend to dramatize reality, which is what I think is being done in this film. I really don't think this movie is about sex sells, it's more about the betrayal of John Tucker.

    1. I definitely agree with your argument that the movie depicts a bit of an extreme sex drive, but I'm not sure if it is totally outrageous. It's not possible that any of us have heard all the crazy stories out there, so maybe there are many more equally as extreme, or even more so than in the movie. We definitely hear them more often in movies, or other forms of entertainment in which they exaggerate situations purposefully, but you may be surprised what lengths some people go to in real life as well. Also, if the movie doesn't have to do with the concept of "sex sells," then why does the revenge taken against John Tucker happen with such sexual scenes? Why do they lure John with a very attractive girl, acting in an extremely sexual manner rather than just using a mediocre girl with other revenge tactics?

  2. Throughout the entire clip, the protagonist appears to be luring and trying to tease the man known as John Tucker. Whilst the video occurs, it is apparent that she uses her physical attraction to entice him. However, this is supposedly a family film and is it necessarily appropriate for a family to watch how the protagonist uses sex to achieve their goal? Most would say no on the matter. Others might say people should be able to express themselves and understand the comedy is not necessarily meant to be taken seriously. The author throughout the video voices a number of valid points. One of the important ideas is that the director may be possibly using sex to sell the video. One could then ask off of that question, is it morally okay to use sex as a selling point towards families?
A numerous amount of controversial topics take place within the blog, some dictating that sex doesn’t always influence one towards their inhibitions. From what Mcardle.20 said, it is certainly true that people do not usually go so far as to climb out of a building for sex. There are many instance however where people go much further than the comedic film. The author does not necessarily portray both sides of the argument, but does certainly offer keen insight towards the movie. The entire movie itself is controversial, as revenge is the primary object in response to a conflict. Another main controversial topic was the topic that the author noted as using sex to manipulate people as a persuasion technique. In various ways this article has been thoroughly analyzed by the author.

    1. I find it great that Mitch refers to another blog commenter in his post. This shows that Mitch is taken into account what others are saying on the blog. I believe this is a good thing to try to connect with what others are saying, but still at the same time putting his own opinions into context. Overall, this is what I like about Mitch’s blog post.

  3. I would say that sex causes people to do some pretty outrageous things, however, I think this trailer and movie probably take it a little bit to the extreme. I don't believe that if you were at a hotel with all your classmates and teachers, you would go out and try to sneak across the balconies in a thong. I still believe that this movie is semi-correct in that sex does drive some people to do things they normally wouldn't for other objects or prizes.

Addressing the question about if producers use sex to sell movies, I would say the answer is definitely yes. This goes for girls just as much as it does guys, especially now-a-days. You always hear girls talking about how they are going to see a movie just because some guy has his shirt off the whole time or at least some of the time. Obviously this also goes for guys, as they see movies just to see sexy women in them, regardless of how good the movie looks.

    1. Casey's comment is great because a new claim is made. He brings up the new idea that this clip is pretty extreme. He provides evidence by explaining the situation and putting "you" in that position. He also does a great job in answering the questions that were asked.

  4. Sex can drive people to do outrageous things such as climb across several balconies to be rewarded with sex but it often depends on the person. Some people have more self control and a sense of responsibility that will prevent them from doing something that stupid and, in real life, dangerous. Sex can also drive people to do things like cheat on their spouses which isn't as dangerous to your life as climbing across balconies, but still results in damaged families and often livelihoods. At the time you're thinking about the current situation which often totally ignores the consequences and repercussions that will come in the future.
I don't think the movie is going to make guys go to more extremes. Most know that it's just a movie and not real life. If anything, guys will watch the movie and be more easily able to realize when they're being toyed with. This will prevent them from getting into the same embarrassing situations as John Tucker.
"I want you so hard, I want you so good" could've led too people thinking that some risks are worth taking if John Tucker had actually gotten some and wasn't just embarrassed beyond belief. Producers do use sex to sell because sex does indeed sell.

    1. I like how you said sex CAN drive people to do outrageous things instead of saying that sex DOES drive people to do outrageous things. It shows that you looked at everyone as one individual and not as whole, meaning that just because sex can drive one person to do these things it doesn't mean it drives everyone to. Also I like the example you gave about how sex can drive people to cheat on their spouses comparing this situation to John climbing across balconies to have sex with Brittany. Lastly, I feel that you used good evidence to back up your claims. Good Job!

  5. I would say yes to all of your questions. I think producers put scenes that exemplify sexual acts into movies for all of those reasons. This doesn't just go for John Tucker Must Die. Almost every popular movie out there has some sort of sex scene in it. I think it draws viewers in and makes the movie more appealing. Even though they didn't show anything in John Tucker Must Die, they were clearly hinting at it. I agree with Casey that this clip is a bit extreme. This would most likely never happen in real life, but the drama appeals to the audience.

  6. Sex is naturally a very strong drive that affects the behavior of human beings. Due to this, it can cause people to act very out of character and do things they might not do otherwise. I believe it's out of desire for pleasure and acceptance among peers, being that this specific situation takes place in high school. In other parts of the movie not shown in the scene, he is also depicted as the alpha male and womanizer. He is very popular in the school and is known to get girls. This I believe also played a factor in why he was so apt to scale a balcony for this girl other than just sex.

    1. This is a great comment because a lot of new ideas are presented rather than repeating what has already been discussed. I like that Rizina talks about two possible reasons John's actions based on what she saw in the clip. She talks about the possibility of his actions being because he wants " acceptance among peers" and that his "alpha male" role could be reasons why he is more likely to scale a balcony. I think there is a good balance of evidence to analysis and liked that she took all of her assumptions out of the trailer and didn't use outside knowledge of the source.

  7. I think that the creators of this movie absolutely use sex to sell this movie. Sex drive is something that is very relatable to people in college. This idea that a guy would wear a ridiculous piece of attire at the request of a girl that he thinks he is going to "get with" isn't too far of a stretch of the imagination for most people. The creators exaggerated a very plausible situation to make the movie relatable to viewers. After being in college for almost a year I have heard stories of my friends or friends of friends traveling all the way across campus with girls just for the possibility of "getting with them". I also think that this is something that a male is more likely to do than a female in our society. Today girls and guys play this game of girls leading guys on and guys having to make the first move, just as was shown in this movie trailer. I think the movie is very relatable and uses sex mixed with the humor of revenge very well to sell their movie.

  9. In regards to the second question, I believe men and women react relatively equal to sex appeal. There are hundreds of romance novels out there with plenty of detailed sex scenes, and those are not directed towards a male audience. Those books use the fact women are drawn to sex-appeal as well. I believe the movie is just being humorous about the idea of guys doing anything for sex. A guy wouldn't usually scale across balconies while all his classmates and coaches are in the rooms just because a girl was teasing him.

    1. Andrew does a good job bringing in evidence to support his claim. I like that he uses common knowledge of romance novels to prove an idea that other commenters did not already say. He adds something new.
